Happy Thanksgiving!

Today is Thanksgiving day! A harvest festival celebrated by United States. Traditionally, it is a time to give thanks for the harvest and express gratitude in general.

Today, I’d like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to everyone around me who supported me all way along. Without you, Olina won’t be the same as of today! In this holiday season, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you so much for all the support!

I am still reading the book ‘Your roadmap to success’. There is a nice quote I’d like to share with you in this beautiful Holiday afternoon:

Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which one has overcome while trying to succeed.

Happy Thanksgiving! To all the people on the road! Keep going! Never give up! :)

Do we have a lot to lose?

steve-jobs-3g-iphone

I think I posted that Steve Job’s video for Stanford’s 2005 graduation already. But when I read this article today, I get goose bumps. I am seating at my desk now, planning the new Vision, Breakthrough assignment for Dale Carnegie Course for the next three months.

In the meanwhile, my friend asked me to write an article to picture a typical day of mine in five years, including where do I live, how do I work, which kinds of family I build up for myself and what’s my life style by then. It is the assignment he got when he studied in MIT. So I seat here, let my mind flying while I roam on facebook, and saw this Steve Job’s quote in Ray Wu’s notes:

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself:

“If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?”

And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something…almost everything

All external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.

Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.

Change the world vs. Change yourself!

Oh, I am so excited! I am so excited! I am so excited now! Why? Let me tell you why! Because another Dale Carnegie class is right around the corner! And I am going back to be the coach again! Oh, I can’t wait to live with Dale Carnegie Spirit for another 12 exciting weeks!

Last night was the class orientation, Jewel told us to dress formally. So I rushed home after work, searched my wardrobe to find something really formal. The only thing I found was a suit I had 10 years ago! Oh, yes, 10 years ago, I used to wear it everyday when I studied Hotel Management in Switzerland. After I came to USA, I dressed casual everyday, so there is no much chance for me to buy formal clothes. So I decided to put it on. I can still put myself in, but it is very tight.

At beginning, Jewel told us a little story, it was about Sharpen Axe: There is a guy who works hard on cutting trees everyday. His boss likes him very much. But later the boss find out that guy keeps working hard, but his productivity become low. The guy realize it himself too, so he works even harder, while the productivity continues drops.

So one day, his boss asks him, hey, what’s happening? The guy say, I don’t know! His boss say, ok, let me check your axe. The he surprise to find out it is the dullest axe he has ever seen! So the bossed asked: Why don’t your sharpen it? The guy say: Oh, I don’t have time to sharpen my axe!

Jewel said, the reason I told this story at beginning of the course is because we all need to sharpen our axe. And Dale Carnegie Training is a perfect place to take a break, look inside, make your heart soften and recharge yourself. I strongly agree.

As to his teaching ability. Jewel said, this is going to be the 56 class he will teach in his life. Yes, Jewel is so experienced! And what I admire him most is he will only sees good part of everyone, while normal people do it oppositely! I just suggested him to set a Fan page in facebook, so all his student can become his fan.

He also explained why he likes to teach? He said: Because I want to retake the course again! During this 12 weeks, I am going to retake the course with you and do every homework with you, to sharpen my axe. This is exactly why I want to be coach again! I like to retake the course and live with this uplifting spirit, in the mean time, sharpen my axe too!

Warren Tsai–Be Positive, Be Constructive, Be Proactive!

Warren Tsai

I met Warren Tsai in MJAA’s annual conference appreciation dinner this April. That night, the guy seated next to me asked: Have you met Warren Yet? I said No. He told me: If there is one guy you should meet tonight, it should be him. So he introduced Warren to me. From the firm handshake, I had an instinct that Warren is a really dedicated guy with great amount of energy. So we exchanged business card and I invited him for a lunch later.

From our conversation, I knew that Warren started his career as an Hardware Engineer, he took his Executive MBA program in HAAS, Berkeley. Now he is a senior product marketing manager at Cypress. Fasincated by his career progress, I invited him to give us a talk for BayFuBai Business.

Warren asked me what topic he should cover. I told him BayFuBai Business are young professionals who are in their early stage of career development. So why not you talk about some success or failures you’ve been through in your career, how MBA helped boost up your career, maybe some hindsight as well. He agreed.

Today is the day Warren give talk for BayFuBai Business. We planned a 40 minutes presentation, followed by a thirty minutes Q&A. Turned out our members enjoyed his talk so much, they asked lots of questions in between, which made the talk last little above two hours.

I was so impressed by Warren’s open minded. He spoke frankly about everything he had been through in his career, showed us his real thoughts. I learned a lot from this very informational presentation. Here are some of my thoughts:

1. Warren started his presentation by two words: VALUE PROPOSITION. In the field of marketing, a customer value proposition consists of the sum total of benefits which a vendor promises that a customer will receive. He told us, if there are two words you can remember from this talk today, those are the words. I didn’t realized what’s that mean at beginning, then later I realized maybe he means the value each individual can presents to the company. Please correct me if I took it wrong. But it is good to always think about the value proposition in everything you are working on.

2. He mentioned Charlie Rose Show in his talk. He said if you have a good one hour to kill, download Charlie Rose’s interview. Since this guy really knows how to talk, he can carry deep conversation with different kinds of people, no matter how successful they are, Charlie can always get into the point and asked the right questions. I felt that’s the area I like to grow, so I would like to check Charlie out!

3. He mentioned whenever he met someone in the professional event, he will follow up with an email afterwards. The subject will always be: Warren Tsai, Senior Product Marketing Manager, the event they meet. Because people are busy, they might receive hundreds email per day, if you only say Hi in the subject, it will soon buried by tons of other emails. What a brilliant idea, so instead of ‘Nice to meet you’ subject, I am going to change me followup email subject to Olina Qian, what I want you to remember about me, then place we meet now. :)

4. Word Smith. I actually never heard it before, seems it means speaks perfect English. Since Warren stressed that the ability of using correct words, speak good English is a must in a professional business world. So he suggested us to check out www.bartleby.com/141. I have not check it out yet when I write this blogpost. I will write a followup post if I think it’s useful.

5. When people asked how can Warren started to social with people. Warren said bring out the common interest before you and the other party, find some similar experience is always a good way to start. Or find some trending topics, like two years ago, the book ‘World is flat’ is so popular, so you can ask the other party what is his opinion about it. I strongly agree! In Dale Carnegie, we acutally have a series technique on how to carry conversation with a stranger. Let me know if you like to learn more about it.

Stay focused! You are what you think!

Being inspired by Preethy’s healthy and positivity philosophy, I decided to go Yoga twice a week and walk one hour twice a week to stay fit.

This morning, I waked up at 6:30am to catch the morning Yoga Session. When I sit inside, I strenched with the instructor. I suddenly realized that Yoga made me reflect really well, maybe because it is quiet in my surroundings. So the first thing I forced myself to do in this beautiful morning is:

Stop watching time!

Yes, I don’t allow myself to keep track of time. Since this precious exercise time is for myself, I am here already, I should be 100% in it!

I am not sure if you also lives in a busy life like me. I certainly have my daily schedule packed from Morning to Evening. And I tried to follow my schedule day by day. It made me exhausted sometimes. It is like at first I have a goal, so I have multipal steps to execute in order to acheve my goal, it soon occupied all my daily schedule. Later my goal becomes follow the schedule and finish everything in my tast list. It is good to stick with my goals, but I feel I am runing in a treadmill, I am just keep on going and going, without a break, I soon become worn out.

In order to change this situation, I decided to do more exercise and spend more time alone with myself. I want to listen to my heart and discover what’s the important to me. Furthermore, I need to find out what made me lost my peace, and what made me can’t focus in every current moment.

After Yoga session, I went to pray in church. It is interesting that today’s topic is stay focus too. It gave me two interesting points:

1. If you always distracted by your thoughts and can’t focus, you should prepare a piece of paper around you. Whenever you think of something and can’t focus, you write it down. Then you should tell yourself–You write it down already, now it is time to forget it and focus on what you are doing.

2. It goes deep into your distraction and find out why you can’t focus. That article said, when you can’t stay focus, don’t blame youself on it. You need to watch yourself not to blame yourself for any mistake you made. It will disturb you more. Also sometimes you can’t focus is because you are proud! Yes, you are proud, so you can’t stand that you are making some stupid mistakes that you should not. So you don’t want to forgive yourself by doing so.

If you think it is difficult, it is!

Just came back from a great dinner with a friend. He is a serial entrepreneur, his first startup was aquired by a big company. Now he is working on the 2nd one in mobile industry.

During our conversation, I found out that we really think alike and his viewing point is really interesting! So I decided to record it down for my future reference and hope it can bring value to you too!

For example, in terms of Entrepreneurship. He said it is a road with one way traffic. So you really need to think about it before you jump in. You need to make sure you really like it. Since it can ends in two ways: Either you succeed, then you will wonder it is by luck or by your ability. So you want to do it again and replicate your success. Or, your failed, then you want to apply your previous experience to the next startup, until you succeed. Maybe you won’t be succeed eventually, but Entrepreneurship is a life style, not a career. Does it sounds familar? Haha, yes, my friend Yu-kai Chou always said the same thing before–Entrepreneur is a life style. But it is good to hear it from an seasoned entrepreneur.

Also, in terms of China. He agreed that there are lots of opportunities in China. But before you go back, you really need to figure out what is the important thing to you. Since Chinese Culture is so different to US. In China, people like to succeed over night. It is also not as open as US. In US, it is a fair game, people respect loyalty and hierarchy. But people from China are raise individually, so everyone has his own goal and own pace. In US, kids are raise in a team environment. So the game rule is different. If you like to take the adventure in an orderless society, China is for you. But if you like to follow rules and live in an fair competition. Maybe you should stay in US.

Preethy Padmanabhan: 10 Steps to reach your goal!

Preethy

I am organizing a group called BayFubai business in Google now. It is a group of engineers from some of the top technology companies (Google, Ebay, Yahoo, Facebook etc) in bay area. The group was formed as an outlet for our entrepreneurial and business interests, in the spirit of sharing the knowledge and the drive to get to the next level. Fubai is a Chinese Pinyin, it means enjoying in a luxury way. Bay means Bay Area. So BayFuBai means enjoying ourselves in Bay Area. We meet around every three weeks in Sunday afternoon. Fascinated by Preethy’s driven and motivation. I invited Preethy to be our guest speaker in Sep 27th.

Yes, Sep 27th. It is the day I flew back from China. I got off airplane around 1pm, rushed home, unload my baggage, took a shower, then drove to Google campus in Mountain View. I actually got a fever before I flew back, so on airplane, I was debating, shall I go or shall I tell them I am sick, so I can’t make it. But it is not nice if I invited Preethy, and I don’t show up. So I decided to go.

As usual, Preety came on time. The topic she gave is about Build your career combining passion with profession. She first shared her vision with us. From profession to personal, from social to others. Then she listed out 10 steps to reach the goal:

Step 1: Understand yourself. For example, what do you enjoy doing? It is Interesting that her interesting point is very similar to mine.

Her interesting points are:

1. Presenting

2. Doing something new every 6 months

3. Networking – talking to people
